On February 15, 2016, God whispered sweet peace and rest to the spirit of Mansfield Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Berkley and sister, Juanita Mallory.
Born March 5, 1923 in Palmyra, Virginia to Ottoway and Julia Bransom Jones, Mansfield Jones was educated in the Fluvanna County Public School system.
Mansfield Jones proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a cook. After receiving his honorable discharge from the military, he became an astute business man. He owned and operated Jones Lumber Company in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia until his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 266.
At an early age, Mansfield Jones became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, later changing his membership to Union Baptist Church. He was a faithful member caring for the needs of the church and its progress. In 1995, he relocated to South Boston, Virginia and became a faithful worshipper at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Upon his return to Palmyra, Virginia, he frequently visited the local churches including Shiloh Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church.
Mansfield Jones was an active volunteer throughout the community. For a brief period of time he served on the Planning Commission in Fluvanna County. He also volunteered for Fork Union and Woodview Nursing Homes. In 1997, he was chosen as Volunteer of the Year.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Angel L. Jones and grandson, Blake E. Poole of Gaithersburg, MD; niece Julia Goldson-Merritt (Francis), great niece and nephew Sade and Herbert Goldson all of Clinton, MD; First Cousins Clarice Higginbotham, Thomas H. Lee (Bernice), and Sharon J. Frazier all of Alexandria, VA; Elaine Griffie of Verona, PA, devoted friend Maurice Hamilton of South Boston, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends. Death is but a path, man must trod, if he is to pass to God. The path ends now for Mansfield. He now awaits his joy.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 in the Funeral Home Chapel at 4002 James Madison Highway Fork Union, Virginia 23055.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Jones Family Cemetery 3552 Haden Martin Road Palmyra, Virginia 23055.
