On Tuesday November 25, 2025, at 8:21am. Laura passed away peacefully, surrounded by love at the Hebrew Home for the Aged, Riverdale (Bronx), New York. She was blessed to live 91 years. Laura joined Columbia Baptist Church at an early age during the pastorate of Reverend I.H. Hines. Laura’s desire was to return to Virginia and be buried in the Columbia Baptist Church cemetery to be near her mother.

Laura was born to the late Evelyn (Lewis) Cooper and Temple Lewis, Sr. Laura is survived by her children, Evelyn Pearson and Richard Strother, daughter-in-law Kelly Strother, grandchildren Malik Pearson, Alyssa Strother, Aaron Strother, Avery Strother and Thomas Gatewood Strother, her sister Barbara Baker, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Laura received her education from St. Joseph Catholic School and the Fluvanna County School District. She moved to Poughkeepsie, New York where she worked for IBM until she retired in 1999. Laura was an active member of Central Baptist Church and served as musician, choir director for the youth choir, sang in the adult choir and participated in a variety of church ministries.

During her retirement Laura returned to Charlottesville, Virginia to help her sister with the care of their elderly mother. Laura joined the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church. She was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, the Wednesday morning Prayer Service, a member of the Adult Usher Board and a member of the Hospitality Ministry.

An excellent cook Laura was known for her fried chicken, macaroni salad, corn pudding, pot roast and other culinary delights favored by family and friends. She enjoyed entertaining in her home and going out to eat. Laura enjoyed going on cruises, traveling to different states or simply going on church-sponsored bus trips to shopping outlets. Laura enjoyed all types of music, including hymns, gospel songs and R&B. She also enjoyed going to Broadway musicals and concerts.

Known for her gentle spirit and beautiful smile, people of all ages were drawn to Laura. She was strong, independent, kind and compassionate. Laura often received compliments on her fashion sense. Whether she was casual or sporting one of her “many church hats”, she was always dressed to the “9s”.
