He worked for 30 years at Ivy Industry in Charlottesville, Virginia. After retirement he worked at Thomasville Furniture for four years.

Vanzell was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl Jackson, George Bruce Jr., Robert James Bruce, and Kelly Bowling. A Father and Mother-in-love, William Mason and Mary Armstrong Gaines Sr., one brother-in-love, William Burton Gaines, Sr., one sister-in-love Eleanor Gaines Jackson and one granddaughter, Amber Jewel Shepherd.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Barbara Gaines Bruce, three daughters, Angela (James), Lisa (Vincent), and Latoya (Brian); four sisters, Elaine, Gwendolyn, Patricia (Kermit) and Gail (Calvin); two brothers, Glen and  Elliott (Violet); six grandchildren, Victoria, Vincent IV, Autumn, Victor, Jules and Blake; two aunts, Thelma Bruce of Wilmington, VA and Thelma Jackson of Kents Store VA; three sisters-in-love, Carrie Edwards of Bronx, NY, Ernestine Thomas and Dorothy Gaines of Palmyra, VA and one brother-in-love, Joseph Gaines (Barbara) of Palmyra, Va., along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.   Devoted family – Gary, Delores and Daryl Bruce.
